Two marginalized, complicated women--one old, the other young--befriend each other through the cultural stigma of smoking and, seeking a sense of home, embark on a journey from the suburbs of Seattle to the heart of Seoul.
Director
Zoe Sua Cho is a filmmaker and co-founder of Mass Ornament Films. Born in Korea, raised in New Zealand and currently based in the United States, she has produced numerous short films including RECORDER EXAM, NEEDLE and WOLKAAN that have screened and won in top international film festivals. She also produced, co-lensed and edited feature documentary DRIFTING TOWARDS THE CRESCENT directed by Laura Stewart that premiered at Rotterdam International Film Festival, and produced Anahita Ghazvinizadeh’s feature narrative THEY, an official selection at Cannes Film Festival. As a director, Zoe's film experiment HOTEL/TRANSIT was nominated for the Critic's Award at Black Movie Geneve International Film Festival. Zoe edited and produced Bora Kim’s directorial, and award-winning, feature debut HOUSE OF HUMMINGBIRD that premiered at the 2018 Busan International Film Festival and enjoyed its European premiere in Berlin International Film Festival’s 2019 Generation program where it won the Grand Prix, it goes on to have its USA premiere at Tribeca 2019 Film Festival. A fellow of LA Film Independent’s Project Involve, she is a 2018 Berlinale Talents alum, a Sundance 2018 editing fellow, and a fellow of Film Independent’s 2018 Fast Track with BELONGING.
Producer
Simone R. Ling is a creative producer and story consultant working within both the Hollywood studio system and indie film arena. Clients have included Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures and the Sundance Institute's Labs for Screenwriters, Directors and Episodic Story. Additionally she spearheads outreach for the Institute’s Asian American Fellowship. Having started her producing career within NHK’s documentary division, Simone served as an executive producer on Aurora Guerrero’s coming-of-age directorial debut MOSQUITA Y MARI, a 2013 Film Independent Spirit Award nominee, and feature producing credits include Anahita Ghazvinizadeh’s THEY, an official selection of the Cannes Film Festival in 2017 that continues to enjoy a 40 plus film festival run. She is a TAP (Trans Atlantic Partners) 2018 producing fellow and a Film Independent 2018 Fast Track fellow with the project BELONGING. A member of MPEG/IATSE, the Producers Guild of America, and BAFTA, she sits on BAFTA/LA’s Student Shorts jury and New Talent Committee. Adjunct Faculty at the American Film Institute, she holds a Master's degree in Modern History from the University of Oxford, and, as a Fulbright Scholar, earned a Master's in Media Studies/Journalism from Stanford University.
Screenwriter
Hannah Sanghee Park was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. She’s the author of THE SAME-DIFFERENT (LSU Press), the winner of the 2014 Academy of American Poets Walt Whitman Award. A former Fulbright Scholar, she holds degrees from the USC School of Cinematic Arts, the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, and the University of Washington. She’s the recipient of fellowships from the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, the CBS Writers Program, The MacDowell Colony, and others. She’s a 2017 Sundance Screenwriters Intensive Fellow and a 2018 Writers Guild of America West TV Writer Access Project honoree.
