Black Is Blue is a chilling dramatic tale inspired by the 2013 murdersuicide of a transwoman who shot and killed a transman before turning the gun on herself. Set against the backdrop of the current tech boom of San Francisco Bay Area, the film follows two trans people in present day Oakland who struggle to find home in their bodies and home in the ever changing landscape of the early 21st century.
Cheryl Dunye
DIRECTOR
Cheryl Dunye is a native of Liberia, and holds an MFA from Rutgers University. She has made over 15 films exploring the intersection of race, class and gender in the lives of queer women of color. Her fourth feature film, THE OWLS was celebrated at national and international film festivals. Her third feature film, Miramax’s MY BABY’S DADDY, was a U.S. box office success. Her second feature, HBO Films STRANGER INSIDE, garnered her an Independent Spirit award nomination for best director. Dunye’s debut film, THE WATERMELON WOMAN, was awarded the Teddy Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1997. Her other works have premiered at film festivals and museums worldwide. Dunye has received numerous awards and honors for her work. Presently based in Oakland, Dunye is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cinema at San Francisco State University.

Marc Smolowitzis a multiaward winning director, producer and executive producer with 20+ years of experience across the entertainment business. His films have screened at Sundance, Berlinale, AFI Docs, IDFA, Tokyo, Melbourne, among others.
Kingston Farady
LEAD ACTOR, CO-WRITER
Kingston Faradyis an openly trans actor, writer, and advocate who was featured in the original Black is Blue short film in 2014. He will be the lead actor and a key collaborator on the feature film version.
