Karen Castanho is the founding partner of Biônica Filmes, she’s responsible for structuring, financing and finding distributors for the projects.
Karen is also in charge of Biônica’s national and international co-productions. She has a vast network of partners and sponsors which enables Bônica Filmes to have long-lasting agreements. Karen has developed coproductions with major studios such as Globo Filmes, Paramount, Warner Bros and Telecine/Globosat. Additionally, she has produced with Portuguese O Som e a Fúria and is developing a project with Argentine Le Tiro Cine.
Furthermore, she has achieved notable deals with Brazilian distributors keeping in mind that each project requires a different distribution strategy. The most influential Brazilian
distributors for mainstream films (Paris Filmes, Downtown Filmes, and Imagem Filmes) and independent ones (Vitrine Filmes, Pandora Filmes and Elo Company) have already acquired the rights to distribute at least one of Biônica's movies, always matching the profile of the distributor with the right public and goals of the film.
Karen is also committed to the development of new projects, researching unique stories relatable with an audience. She bought the rights of Rita Lee's book, the 2017's Brazilian bestseller in the non-fictional category.
Previous work and education of Karen include a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Univesity of Sao Paulo and a 15 years' career in an investment fund for reforestation, security, and film. She raised more than R$40 Million for more than 20 films.
Told with dark humor, TOLL centers on Suellen, a toll booth attendant who realizes she can use her job to help a gang of thieves steal watches from the wealthy people driving between São Paulo and the coast.
