Julián Fernández Prieto was born in Chile in 1981 and entered the world of film and documentary at a very young age. His father, also a documentary filmmaker, taught him how to develop life in front of the camera and to travel behind the lens through Chile and America. He studied Directing for Documentary Cinema at the School of Cinema of Chile.
In 2007, he traveled through the Americas to document the native peoples and their landscapes. Throughout these years of research, he worked on different projects for television including for TVN (Chile) and BRANQUIA Channel 10 (Mexico), as well as on tourism content with Tourism Chile and RF Films. He’s also worked on documentaries made for international companies such as Discovery Channel, National Geographic and Disney Network.
He’s directed personal projects including KLOKETEN and THE HOLY LORD OF THE CANE. KLOKETEN premiered in 2008 at the Cine Morelos in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Julián’s foray into the underwater world led him to create BRANQUIA in 2009 and other personal projects on diving and Mayan archeology. Since 2012 he has made more than 20 dives in different lagoons in the South of Chile.
In 2011 he founded the project -1 CINE, an independent cinema in Puerto Varas located in the Molino Machmar art center, which currently shows five weekly performances. He currently lives in Puerto Varas and develops audiovisual works for different companies, linked to tourism, artisanal fishing, and salmon farming.
HENRI: THE LAST PIRATE follows Loti, the son of Henri Garcia, a French diver who decided to leave his European life behind and settle in Rapanui, Easter Island: the most isolated place in the world. For more than 30 years Henri documented his life on the island and shared a deep friendship with filmmaker Julian Fernandez’s father.
