After studying Integrated Marketing and Communications at Mansoura University, Ali El-Arabi started working at Dream TV (Egypt). He produced and directed several films with Dream TV, including THE LADY OF THE GIRLS, WITNESS AND MARTYR, WHAT’S HIDDEN IS GREATER, DREAMING OF A CONSTITUTION, and THE 6TH OF APRIL MOVEMENT. He also trained reporters on how to shoot news pieces.
In 2011, he joined ZDF as a freelance producer, working on projects such as THE CURSE OF THE PHARAOHS, FREE PEOPLE, a number of films about Syrian refugees, and A MOUNTAIN IN SINAI, among others. In May 2012, he joined Stern TV in Germany as a producer and coordinator, making documentaries such as WOMEN FROM TAHRIR, EGYPT IN THE ERA OF THE MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD, and CHILDREN OF THE ARAB REVOLUTIONS, as well as several other shorter form pieces.
Following Stern TV, he worked as a filmmaker for National Geographic, making films like HOMER -- about carrier pigeons -- and many of their other films in and out of Egypt. In 2015, he set up Ambient Light Productions, which has focused mainly on projects for the Arab League, films about refugee displacement all over the world, and investigative pieces about women’s and children’s rights in the Middle East. CAPTAINS OF ZA'ATARI is his debut feature film.
In the Za’atari refugee camp in Jordan, Syrian teenagers Mahmoud and Fawzi are friends who aspire to become professional soccer players. When a world renowned sports academy visits the camp, they have a chance to make their dream a reality.
